"Never to be Forgotten" This photograph of dust-covered firefighters raising the U.S. flag as they stand defiantly against the gray and white landscape of the devastation of the World Trade Center disaster on September 11, 2001 instantly became a symbol of the enduring American spirit. The photograph was a Pulitzer Prize finalist and the winner of numerous awards, and the image has appeared on the covers of countless news publications. On June 11, 2002, the U.S. Postal Service introduced the ‘Heroes’ stamp, featuring this image. Thomas E. Franklin has been a photojournalist for over 16 years and a staff photographer at The Record in Bergen County, NJ since 1993. He has won more than 30 national and international awards for his photography.
